Parking

With over 110,000 people living on just eight square miles of land, downtown Charleston is a highly populated metropolitan area.  Consequently, parking is at a premium!  This is currently the biggest problem facing residents that work, study, or live on the Charleston peninsula.

If you live on the Charleston peninsula, it is recommended that you secure long-term parking for your vehicle and walk or bike to as many places as possible.

There are only two types of parking spaces in downtown Charleston: public and private!  This may sound trite, but the City of Charleston, as well as most property owners, employs a combination of methods for dealing with parking violations.  These methods include parking tickets, booting, and towing.  Make no mistake; the operators of the towing companies are experts.  Most of the their drivers have been working on the peninsula for decades.

Please be courteous by not parking in someone else’s space.  If you are not paying for your parking space, chances are good your vehicle will be ticketed, booted, or towed.

The following resources are provided to help you navigate the many obstacles to operating a vehicle in the downtown area:

The Environmental Services Division is responsible for garbage and trash collection as well as the enforcement of environmental codes. Visit their webpage for maps showing garbage and trash collection schedules. (For recycling services see Charleston County).

Trash collection is different from garbage collection.  Trash is usually the overflow generated when Tenants move in or out of a particular location.  Since much of the Charleston peninsula is on a rental season, usually August through July of the following year, this creates unsightly accumulation of “Trash” as many residents are migrating during this period.  In order to avoid being fined, please be sure to follow the City’s published guidelines.
